How hard is the riding?

This ride is classed as – Grade 2 – 4: Intermediate – Advanced

Key elements that give this grading are:

  • Remote area – advanced medical care can be several hours away
  • Fatigue – challenging terrain
  • Dust or mud – dust or mud may vary the difficulty depending on conditions
  • River crossings – our route will include a few river crossings or causeways which can be daunting

See our Track Grading System for more detailed information to help you decide if this ride is right for you.

How much motorcycle riding experience do I need to do this ride?

We like to make our tours suitable for “an average rider on a big-bore adventure bike”.

So we expect riders to have at least some off-road riding experience – ideally two years.

The main Adventure routes are usually suitable for big adventure bikes, like a Ducati Multistrada or BMW R1250GS with off-road knobby tyres fitted.

For sure less experienced riders can, and have, joined our tours and they find them to be an incredible learning experience. You can learn so much just being around other riders. We suggest this is not the ride for you if you are just starting out.

If you have any questions or concerns just give us a call and we are happy to have a chat about your personal situation.

What is the size of the group doing this ride?

This ride is capped at 80 riders.

If this sounds like a lot to you then bear in mind that we have experience in managing motorcycle tour events with over 250 riders! We have the systems and knowledgable staff in place to effectively manage these larger group sizes.

A group size of 80 is our preference because it means we can get a good quality of accommodation for everyone during the ride. The group makes you feel part of a big event but also you get the opprtunity to meet and talk to everyone during the ride and make new friends.

Do I need knobby tyres on my bike?

Yes absolutely, we always recommend riders have knobby tyres on their bikes to maximise your safety and enjoyment.

Our recommended tyres in most situations are Motoz Tractionator Adventure or Motoz Tractionator Rallz (Nick’s favourite!) for their predictable off-road grip and outstanding durability.

For sure other tyres like Continental TKC80 or Pirelli Scorpion Rally are OK too.

We don’t advise riders to use 50/50 tyres like Hidenau K60 Scout or Continental TKC70. These styles of tyre with a solid centre rib just simply don’t offer enough traction in many off-road situations, particularly when conditions get wet.

Do you rent motorcycles for this ride?

Yes we do have Rental Bikes options available on this tour. Please email us with your enquiry.

Can I bring my own motorcycle?

Yes. This ride is primarily for riders on their own adventure or enduro bikes.

Which bike should I bring? Big bike or little bike?

For those of you that have the luxury of more than one bike to choose from we would give this information:

  • Much of this ride is through hilly terrain or farmland where we will cover around 250-350km per day. Average speeds will be around 50-70kph.
  • A 250-500cc single cylinder bike is going to be working hard on some of the wide open roads but they are few and far between. Longest stretch on a sealed road should be less than 40km.
  • A 650-700cc single will be ideal for most of the terrain on our TransTerra rides.
  • a 800-1200cc plus bike will be fine on the main Adventure route. If weather conditions are wet or extreme in some way then a big 800cc + bike can be a handful but if you have good knobby tyres on then you should be OK.
  • If you intend to ride the Enduro sections you will be better off on a single-cylinder bike, if you are riding a multi-cylinder bike you had better be a gun rider and have some helpful mates with you!
  • If you intend to ride to the start or ride home after the event then a multi-cylinder is certainly better because you will soon realise how big Australia is!

Can I bring my Enduro bike on this ride?

Yes, this ride is suitable for Enduro bikes providing you have a minimum fuel range of around 200km. We will confirm the estimated fuel range required for each individual event as we get closer to the event.

How do I follow the planned routes?

You are expected to navigate this ride using a GPS or Smartphone.

We provide the pre-planned routes as a .GPX file you can load into your GPS or Smartphone navigation app. This will allow you to follow our planned route at your own pace and arrive safely at the overnight stop.

For each event we also provide daily route sheets as a PDF file for your phone which include an overview map and address details of fuel, food, overnight accommodation stops etc.

In some situations we will also have route marking arrow stickers that are put up by our lead riders as a physical marker.

Do I need to carry my overnight luggage on my motorcycle?

No, for our off-road adventure tours we provide a luggage support van. You will drop your bag at the van each morning and the van will carry your bag to the overnight stop where it will be waiting for you to collect at the end of the day.

For our international road tours we typically don’t provide a luggage support vehicle so you will have to carry your own luggage. Usually our rental bikes come equipped with panniers and/or top box. Please confirm your required luggage options at time of booking.

Read our Adventure Riders Prep Guide for tips on what and how to pack.

Can I bring my wheelie gear bag to carry my overnight gear?

No. Large gear bags, wheelie suitcases are not permitted in our luggage van. We have strict capacity limits.

Hard pannier cases are not recommended as your luggage because we can’t guarantee they won’t get scratched or damaged in transit therefore we recommend soft bags only.

Read our Adventure Riders Prep Guide for tips on what and how to pack.

Can I ride with panniers or top box on my bike?

No, for safety reasons we do not allow riders to ride with hard (aluminium or plastic) panniers or top box on their bikes for our off-road adventure tours. We have seen too many injuries caused by hard boxes hitting or trapping riders.

Read our Adventure Riders Prep Guide for tips on what and how to pack.

We recommend only soft-luggage be used on the bike during this event.

What gear/tools do I need to carry with me during the day?

Read our Adventure Riders Prep Guide for tips on what and how to pack. As a minimum you should carry spare tubes for your wheels and the tools to remove and replace your wheels. Zip ties and tape work miracles too!

Even if you don’t know a spanner from a screwdriver someone in our crew will be coming to lend a hand.
