Ride the ultimate European Alpine passes

We are heading back to Europe in 2024 to give you a fix of fine food and jaw dropping alpine riding.  This is the first of two tours we have planned for the 2024 Euro riding season.

Over 9 amazing days we invite you to join us on a European road tour of the gorgeous French & Italian Mediterranean Coast, soaring French Alps and as many awesome mountain passes as we can squeeze in between!

The route we will ride includes the most incredible tarmac roads you can possibly imagine.  From a distance, the roads appear to be grey ribbons snaking their way up and down mountainsides.  From up close, they appear to be the most fun you have ever experienced on a motorcycle!  For an Australian travelling to Europe and riding the European Alpine passes it is simply mind blowing.  The scenery is stunningly beautiful.  The roads are incredibly twisty and fun to ride.  The food is drool worthy amazing, and the company, well of course it is the best!

Tour Details
Europe manages to squeeze a lot in a small area so we can guarantee after 9 days touring around you will have so many memories jammed in your brain it will take a while to process it all. The photos and video you capture will serve you well to help remember all the amazing places we visit. We have visited France several times and have built up a great catalogue of knowledge around the best places to visit to make for a “money can’t buy” European experience. Truth be told you can buy into our knowledge and research we join maschine for Tour des Alpes 2024!

Our tour through France in 2024 could be divided into four regions:
  • French Alps
  • Farmland of Provence
  • Rivers and gorges
  • French Riviera / Cote d’ Azur

Our Tour des Alpes begins near the cosmopolitan city of Milan, Italy. Easy to access from anywhere in the world and a history which is pretty hard to beat. Plenty of the world’s rich and famous call this region home.

Our ideal European tour takes in plenty of mountain passes and our days in the French Alps are sure to deliver us plenty of spectacular roads. The European Alps begin with a bang from the French end and quickly gain altitude as they climb away from the coast and arc east towards Italy, Austria and beyond. We will tick off many famous passes like Mont Blanc, Col de Tourmalet or Col du Galibier. If you’ve ever watched the Tour de France you will see at lot of familiar signs at the mountain peaks we will cross. You will no doubt be amazed at the awe inspiring peaks around Mont Blanc. You think Australia has mountains? Nah ah! At over 4,800 metres Mont Blanc is the highest peak in all of the European Alps and your reference point of “mountain” is likely to be changed after this tour.

If you’ve done any research or dreaming of riding through Southern France you’ve probably seen images of the incredible “balcony roads” where the road clings to the side of mountains and every now and then punches through the side of the mountain with a mass of rock towering over the road. These are so cool to ride through, invariably with amazing views off the side. We will ride through Gorges du Verdon region where you will get to ride several balcony roads.

Mention Southern France and many people will probably conjure up visions of neat rows of purple lavender stretching over the hills or quaint villages steeped in history. Our timing in summer gives us the best chance for you to grab that Insta worthy shot you’ve always wanted standing in amongst the rows of lavender. We love breaking up the days ride by having a leisurely lunch or coffee at small cafes in the villages we pass through. Typically these aren’t planned and we just go with the flow of the day.

Coming back to the coast will drown you in more gorgeous views that demand you add on a few extra days at the end of tour to relax and process the memories you have just created during our tour. Bask in the glory of early summer before the throngs of people fill the beaches. Most of our time on tour is spent away from the big touristy destinations but you will get a taste of them on our tour.

Our European tours are all on-road but that will be adventure enough! Nick loves nothing more than studying maps and researching the hell out of locations to make for the most interesting riding you can imagine. Due to the tight twisty mountain passes we are mostly riding we would not recommend this tour for a beginner rider. You should be an experienced rider that will be OK riding on the “wrong” side of the road, can handle tight turns and endure the occasional hairy moment alongside a massive cliff edge with a dodgy looking guardrail by your side.

If you like a little bit of luxury in your life then you will love the accommodation we present you with on our tours. Typically at least 4 stars but each property is carefully selected to wow you in some way. Whether its location, views, food or just straight up pampering, when you climb off the bike after an action packed days ride you will be treated well.

Equally we love exploring the local food options and seek out memorable meals. Most meals are included too so you don’t have to stress about where to eat, we do all the research for you.

We have two tours running back to back in 2024 so there’s nothing stopping you from completing both tours if you really want to experience more of Europe. Click here for more info on our Pinnacle Passes tour.

To reel off some of the locations we will visit as part of this tour:

  • Mont Blanc and Chamonix
  • Gorges du Verdon
  • Balcony roads of Southern France
  • Lavender fields in Provence
  • Famous French Riviera towns like Nice and Monaco
  • Portofino on the Italian Riviera

Maybe you’ve heard of some of these? And rightly so! If not, look them up and you will be salivating at the amazing roads and their views.

As we are travelling through multiple alpine passes, the riding will be challenging in places with many twisty roads, impossibly tight hairpins and some exhilarating days in the saddle. This is not a ride for the inexperienced rider. Although we will be riding on sealed roads, we can guarantee you it will still be an adventure!

This is a small group ride and pillions are most welcome. Depending on the group size we may also have a support vehicle following us which can carry passengers or some precious cargo.

The key to enjoying this trip is to soak up and enjoy the European way of life, go with the flow, enjoy your surroundings and the fabulous friends you’ll make along the way!

All arrangements on tour including motorcycle hire will be organised by us.  All you have to do is book your flights to arrive into Milan by the nominated date and let Maschine take care of the rest!

*If riders choose Shared accommodation package it is dependant on an even number of riders choosing this option. Riders may need to upgrade to Single if no other riders choose Shared. The beds in European shared rooms are typically single beds, sometimes in tight quarters.

To secure your place simply confirm your intentions with a $2,000 AUD deposit. We will invoice the remaining balance for your tour in Euro with the option of multiple payment instalments during 2024. These instalment payments will be via invoice paid in Euro currency (initial deposit paid in AUD).

Itinerary

Day 0 - Sun 30 JuneArrive Milan, Italy

Beginning near Milan gives us all plenty of flight options to fly in.

We will first do a meet and greet at around 5pm at our hotel near Monza race circuit where you will meet the crew and we will run through the program for our tour. Later, we will enjoy a traditional Italian welcome dinner that evening before a good night’s rest.

Day 1 - Mon 1 JulyMilan > Aosta

Breakfast at the hotel before we head to the rental depot to collect our motorcycles for the tour. A quick commute through the streets of Milan before hitting the Autostrada to clear out of the city. We can leave our big gear bags at the hotel until we return.

We will depart Milan before midday and take the roads west towards the mountains of the Italian & French Alps.  Our overnight stop is just shy of the French border in the Aosta Valley. Our accommodation tonight is a grand building that will impress even the fussiest traveller.

Day 2 - Tue 2 JulyAosta > Chamonix

Left or right? France or Switzerland?

We have choices as we depart Italy, either way we go we will enjoy incredible mountain switchback roads and will end up in France that night.

Day 3 - Wed 3 JulyChamonix - Mont Blanc loop day

If the weather is in our favour we will be suggesting starting the morning by taking the cable car up to Aiguille du Midi

We have the choice today of looping through mountain passes or perhaps you would like to take a rest day and summit Mont Blanc before enjoying our hotel in the Alps.

Day 4 - Thu 4 JulyChamonix > Briancon

We continue our way through the Alps today with some amazing mountain passes including famous ones like Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Galibier.

Day 5 - Fri 5 JulyBriancon > Provence

We descend down out of the Alps proper and begin to explore the many rivers and gorges that are characteristic of Southern France. More importantly our timing in early summer is ideal to see the iconic lavender fields in full bloom.

Day 6 - Sat 6 JulyProvence loop

The rolling French farmland of this region is where you can enjoy the spectacular views of neat rows of lavender fields as they come into full bloom in summer. Amazing Insta-worthy picture opportunities abound.

Our accommodation is equally Insta-worthy and you may just choose to sit it out and enjoy your time here.

Day 7 - Sun 7 JulyProvence > Saint Paul de Vence

A benefit of staying in Provence is it’s proximity to the stunning Gorges du Verdon. These rock bordered chasms drop hundreds of metres to the river floor below. We might take a dip in the river but you might be surprised by the frigid blue water even in though summer is well underway!

We make our way through gorges, along rivers and over mountains towards the coastline of the Mediterranean near Vence. If our reservation is still good, tonight we will treat you a Michelin starred restaurant that is an unforgettable dining experience with wait staff that are skilled at upselling you to the irresistible produce of Champagne and the local region.

Day 8 - Mon 8 JulySt Paul de Vence > Santa Margerita Ligure

We will skirt around Nice via some of the roads used in the Monte Carlo Rally and via the stunning coastline around Monaco and Cote d’ Azur. Our riding is nearly over but tonight we enjoy an evening that is the epitome of the Italian Riviera lifestyle to enjoy together and round out a magical week on the bikes.

We will overnight in Santa Margerita but plan a boat cruise into the stunning Portofino harbour. Portofino is the essence of A-Lister lifestyle on the Italian Riviera with mega yachts jostling for space in the small harbour. Some of the “boats” are too dam big too enough fit inside and must be moored offshore!

Day 9 - Tue 9 JulySanta Margerita > Milan

We’ve done the road from the Italian coast north to Milan several times and we love it for the countless twists and turns. After hugging the Trebbia river and walking along a wonky “Hunchback” bridge we will take you along our private “Pavia Racetrack” sitting in the middle of open fields on gentle sloping farmland. Like a perfectly smooth slot car track laid in amongst wheatfields it is a surreal experience to carve through it’s curves with clear vision all the way down the hill. Sublime riding.

After arriving back in Milan, we will return our rental bikes near Linate airport, collect our gear bags and then make a short transfer and check into our hotel in downtown Milano.  Tonight we will feast at a traditional Milanese restaurant in the shadows of the incredible Duomo to celebrate La Dolce Vita!

Day 10 - Wed 10 JulyDepart for home

Enjoy a final breakfast together at our hotel before we pack our bags and head for home or onto your next adventure in Europe. You’ve always got the option of resting for a few days and then joining us again for our Pinnacle Passes tour beginning on Sunday 14 July!

How hard is the riding?

This ride is classed as – Grade 2-3: Intermediate

Although this tour is all on bitumen roads they are anything but a cruise. We will traversing switchback hairpin turns, riding narrow mountain roads with huge drops, crazy Italian traffic and all of this is on the “wrong” side of the road.

See our Track Grading System for more detailed information to help you decide if this ride is right for you.

How much motorcycle riding experience do I need to do this ride?

We expect riders on this tour to have several years riding experience – ideally two years. Although this is primarily a road tour at least some off-road riding experience may help as some roads can be much tighter and rougher than Australian roads.

For sure pillion passengers are welcome to be a part of this tour and they will find it to be an incredible experience. You will see and experience so much on the back of a motorcycle.

If you have any questions or concerns just give us a call and we are happy to have a chat about your personal experience level and whether this ride is right for you.

What is the size of the group doing this ride?

This ride will have 6 – 12 riders plus minimum of 2 tour guides

We find a maximum group size of 12 is great because it allows us to take you the most spectacular and unique restaurants and hotels during our trip.

Over the days you are sure meet and talk to everyone during the ride and make some new friends.

Do you rent motorcycles for this ride?

Yes, rental bikes are included in the tour pricing. If you have access to your own motorcycle in Europe then you are welcome to bring that along and we will adjust the tour pricing accordingly.

Please see our list of available bikes here.

Can I bring my own motorcycle?

Yes. This ride is primarily for riders coming from Australia and renting a motorcycle but you can your own adventure or touring motorcycle.

How do I follow the planned routes?

We provide the pre-planned routes as a .GPX file you can load into your GPS or Smartphone navigation app. We typically stick together as a group during the day though using the cornerman system to aid with navigation with a lead rider guiding the way and a sweep rider keeping the bunch together.

Trusting our tour guide to lead the way will help you relax and take in the scenery or focus on the thrill of the road rather than stressing over getting lost.

We like to allow riders to go at their own pace and choose how quick or slow they take things. Riders safety is paramount so we can be assured that everyone arrives safely at the overnight stop.

For each event we also provide printed itineraries and route sheets which include an overview map and address details of overnight accommodation stops etc.

Do I need to carry my overnight luggage on my motorcycle?

Yes. For our international road tours we typically don’t provide a luggage support vehicle so you will have to carry your own luggage on your motorcycle. Usually our rental bikes come equipped with panniers and/or top box so you can secure your gear. Please confirm your required luggage options at time of booking.

Read our Overseas Riders Prep Guide for tips on what and how to pack.

Can I bring my wheelie gear bag to carry my overnight gear?

Yes. As our overseas tours start and finish at the same location we have the ability to leave your suitcases or wheelie gear bag at either the motorcycle rental depot or our hotel until we return at the completion of our tour.

Remember luggage weight limits at the airport though and also bear in mind you will have limited space on the bike to carry your overnight clothes and toiletries etc.

Can I ride with panniers or top box on my bike?

Yes. Typically our rental bikes come fitted with hard plastic or aluminium panniers and/or  top boxes to carry your gear. Alternatively you may decide to travel light with just a dry bag that gets strapped on but keep security in mind for when our bikes are parked.

Read our Surviving Your First European Ride  page for tips on what and how to pack.

What gear/tools do I need to carry with me during the day?

We’ve got you covered here! Our tour guide and sweep rider will carry a full set of tools and first aid gear  to deal with any small issues on the road. Typically the rental bikes will include some basics like a tyre puncture repair kit.

Do I need visas?

If you are an Australian resident you should not require a visa for the countries we are visiting. Please check the Smart Traveller website for travel requirements based on your situation.
