If you are just starting out in adventure riding there is a lot to think about and frankly it can mess with your mind! One of the big questions is “What tools should I carry”? Well, Nick Selleck from maschine has complied a list below of the Top 10 Tools an adventure rider should carry with them:
- Multi-tool: A good quality multi-tool can come in handy for various tasks, including; tightening fasteners, cutting wires, filing metal, and opening bottles of red.
- Tyre repair kit: Flat tyres are one of the most common problems for adventure motorcyclists, so carrying a tyre repair kit that includes patches, tubeless repair “strings” or plugs, glue, and a pump can be a lifesaver.
- Spare tubes: In addition to a tyre repair kit, it’s also a good idea to carry spare tubes for your motorcycle’s tires. Even if your wheels are tubeless, if your sidewall gets severely damaged fitting a tube may be the only way of getting you back on the road.
- Portable air compressor: A small portable air compressor can help you inflate your tires and get you back on the road quickly. Either a 12 volt plug-in compressor or rechargeable electric compressor is great for larger volume adventure wheels.
- Chain lube / WD40: A clean and well-lubricated chain is essential for your motorcycle’s performance and longevity, so carrying chain lube can help you maintain your chain on the go. A lubricant like WD40 has a hundred and one uses on a motorcycle besides lubing your chain.
- Duct tape: Duct tape / cloth tape is a versatile tool that can be used for emergency repairs, such as patching holes in tents or luggage, reattaching broken plastics, mending riding gear, even as a bandage for first aid.
- Zip ties: Zip / cable ties can be used to secure loose parts or hold broken pieces together temporarily. Just ask Toby Price!
- Bungee cords or elastic straps: Bungee cords or straps can be used to secure luggage and other items to your motorcycle. Nick loves Rok Straps!
- First-aid kit: Accidents can and will happen, so carrying a first-aid kit with basic supplies such as bandages, band aids, antiseptic, eye drops and pain relievers can be essential. Motorcyclists should also pack a decent set of shears (scissors) as cutting your riding gear is often one of the first things the ambos will do! Eeek!
- GPS and/or maps: While not a tool per se, carrying a GPS and/or maps can help you navigate and find your way if you get lost or need to take an alternative route.
Of course the next question I would have is “Do you know how to use all these tools”? Fixing a flat tyre is a whole topic in itself but carrying these tools with you can fix a hell of a lot of problems on the trails. It’s a great start.
