Do you want to conquer your fear of riding in sand?

Then our Sand Masterclass will help get you comfortable riding in sand and other loose surfaces.  It will arm you with the skills and knowledge to make you a safer and more confident rider in the soft stuff.

This course is not held at a traditional training location, instead we take you to locations where you’ll ride off-road areas with lots of sandy tracks to practice on.  It is in a real world riding environment which is the best training location!

Course Details

Sand can often be the nemesis for many riders of adventure bikes. It requires different inputs into the motorcycle to navigate successfully.

We will work to build up your confidence and proficiency in sand by working on the basics first. We will establish a good body position on the bike which is essential to progress further

What You Will Learn

The curriculum for the day will include:

  • Explanation of different cornering styles - both seated and most importantly standing adventure style.
  • Using footpeg weighting to make the big bikes turn. Using peg weighting to control slides.
  • Pros & Cons of each body position technique and where / when you should use each style.
  • Vision - understanding target fixation and using it to advantage.
  • Line selection in various scenarios. Wide entry for a tight exit.
  • Flow - how to maintain a nice flow through rough trail sections and using the terrain to help you turn.
  • Braking drills - Hard "emergency" stops, front & rear wheel lock ups, smooth braking in corners, dragging the rear brake to settle the bike.
  • Detection of threshold of traction - what are the initial signs of losing traction at either end?
  • Using the clutch to modulate engine braking & drive into and out of corners.
  • Throttle control techniques & drills.
  • How to make the most of a bad situation. Crash avoidance when you overcook it into a corner.
  • Understanding your bikes electronic Traction Control & ABS - when it can help and when it can hinder.

The course is designed for intermediate level adventure riders that have some solid skills but are looking to take their cornering to the next level.

As with all Maschine training courses we capture videos and photos during the day that get posted on our website for you to review yourself later and critique your own style.

This course is your chance to develop your skills and show up your mates as you make time on them around every bend. Or perhaps you just want to feel more comfortable and be smooth around the bends to ultimately be a safer rider in all situations.

Your Coach

Our lead coach for this course will be Maschine’s own Nick Selleck.  He is a Motorcycling Australia Level 1 accredited coach and has been riding off-road for 40 years.  He takes pride in being a smooth, safe and consistent rider. Nick has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share when it comes to off-road riding. Nick grew up riding off-road and after several years competing in Motocross, Enduro and Supermotard he has spent the last 8 years planning and organising adventure tours.

His experience in adventure riding over the past 8 years includes exploring the iconic regions of; Victorian High Country, Tasmania, Flinders Ranges, Corner Country and Birdsville, researching and retracing the Burke & Wills expedition route – Melbourne to Karumba, Tanami Track, Kimberley region including Gibb River Road, Arnhem Land, Savannah Way and Gulf Country and exploring the length of the Great Diving Range amongst others. Throughout most of these trips he has shared them with many riders so has not only learnt from his own experience but noted the challenges other riders have faced.

It would be fair to say few riders in Australia could claim to have such a broad knowledge of riding and managing motorcycle tours in as many regions as Nick Selleck. Others may have more intimate knowledge of specific regions but few could match Nick’s spread of knowledge. This all adds to Nick’s ability to relate to riders challenges and help create a path for them to improve their riding skill.

Where additional coaches are required for courses we choose to work with the best of the best. Coaches are chosen not only for their riding skill but also their personality to ensure they can explain often complex riding techniques which can add valuable input to the training courses.
