Maschine Adventure Rider Academy

28 Nov-1 Dec – Mansfield, VIC

Become The Complete Adventure Rider

We’ve designed Australia’s most comprehensive training course for you, the adventure rider.

We help you build on your strengths and address the areas to help you maximise your riding enjoyment.

Most rider training courses run for one or two days.  The Maschine Adventure Riding Academy runs for 4 days and is designed to cover more than just riding skills; you will also learn some of the “soft skills” including trailside repairs, what tools to pack and how to use them,  GPS & navigation skills, luggage packing plus much more.  The breakdown is approximately 70% rider training, 30% non-riding skills training.

This is a “live in” training camp where all riders and instructors stay on site at the same accommodation with the education continuing into the night once the riding is done for the day. Basically you get to eat, breath and sleep adventure riding for 4 days!

What You Will Learn

The skills cover in this course include:

  • Core – Level 1 riding skills
  • Advanced – Level 2 riding skills
  • Specific obstacles; hills, rocks, logs, ruts
  • Bike set up – get those controls in the correct position
  • GPS navigation – have it work with you not against you
  • Accident scene management
  • Basic wilderness survival skills
  • How to pack for adventure riding
  • Camping from an adventure bike
  • What accessories are useful and what are just “farkles”
  • What tools to pack and how to use them – trailside maintenance & repairs
  • How to dewater a bike after drowning it
  • Riding gear – how to dress and be prepared for all riding conditions
  • Fitness and fatigue management
  • Planning for expedition length or overseas trips

Some of the skills will be developed in a controlled environment.  Some of the training will take place in the classroom.  Some of the training will take place out on the trails where we will tackle whatever comes our way in the real world!

In the past we have found some of the most useful information has been gleaned by the group sharing stories or experiences. This can be the catalyst to learn the skills you have found lacking in the past. We allow plenty of time for this to develop during the course with socialising over meals.

Lead coach for all Maschine training courses is company director Nick Selleck.  He is a Motorcycling Australia Level 1 accredited coach and has been riding off-road for 40 years.  He takes pride in being a smooth, safe and consistent rider.  Several years spent racing MX, Enduro and Supermoto gave Nick a great skill set to call upon.  More recently he has clocked up big kilometres each year riding in both Australia and overseas.  This constantly tops up his knowledge pool and keeps his experience fresh and relevant to the students he teaches.

As part of the program Maschine will consult with you prior to the course to see what you want to get out of it and what skills you would like to work on.  Follow up post training will include photos and video posted in our gallery so you can review your own technique from the course.

Included in the Maschine Adventure Academy package is:

  • 4 days premium coaching
  • All meals included over the 4 days

The venues chosen for this course include quality 4 star accommodation in rural settings so we can concentrate on the learning.

When asked where the motivation came from for this course Maschine’s Nick Selleck had this to say “Some 20 odd years ago I attended a 5 day motocross camp.  The lessons that I learnt during that school have stuck with me for all this time because it was such an immersive training environment.  My goal is replicate that with our 4 day Adventure Riding Academy.  There is so much adventure riders have to become proficient with in order to successfully complete the big ambitious expeditions that many of us aspire to do.”

About Your Instructors

Our lead coach for this course will be Maschine’s own Nick Selleck. He is a Motorcycling Australia Level 1 accredited coach and has been riding off-road for 40 years.  He takes pride in being a smooth, safe and consistent rider. Nick has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share when it comes to off-road riding. Nick grew up riding off-road and after several years competing in Motocross, Enduro and Supermotard he has spent the last 8 years planning and organising adventure tours.

His experience in adventure riding over the past 8 years includes exploring the iconic regions of; Victorian High Country, Tasmania, Flinders Ranges, Corner Country and Birdsville, researching and retracing the Burke & Wills expedition route – Melbourne to Karumba, Tanami Track, Kimberley region including Gibb River Road, Arnhem Land, Savannah Way and Gulf Country and exploring the length of the Great Diving Range amongst others. Throughout most of these trips he has shared them with many riders so has not only learnt from his own experience but noted the challenges other riders have faced.

It would be fair to say few riders in Australia could claim to have such a broad knowledge of riding and managing motorcycle tours in as many regions as Nick Selleck. Others may have more intimate knowledge of specific regions but few could match Nick’s spread of knowledge. This all adds to Nick’s ability to relate to riders challenges and help create a path for them to improve their riding skill.

Where additional coaches are required for courses we choose to work with the best of the best. Coaches are chosen not only for their riding skill but also their personality to ensure they can explain often complex riding techniques which can add valuable input to the training courses.

Who Is This Course Aimed At?

This course is really designed to suit any rider regardless of skill level apart from riders with zero riding experience. Even if you are a road rider that has never been off-road this is a good place to get into it.

The course is designed to progress from Core fundamental techniques to more advanced training across the weekend. Even if you have many years experience this course will help make correct any bad habits that may have developed or exposure to different terrain types that you may not  have had exposure to.

Regardless of the brand or model of adventure or enduro bike you ride Maschine can help you get more out of your bike riding experience.

From beginner to advanced level riders, this Academy is for everyone.

Bike & Gear Preparation

As far as bike prep goes there isn’t a lot to worry about:

  • Knobby style adventure tyres are best to get the most out of the course. We use and recommend Motoz Adventure tyres. Other brands like Continental TKC80, Metzler Karoo 3 etc. are OK but don’t provide the same awesome life and grip as the Motoz tyres 😉  Road trail tyres will really limit your ability to get the most out of it.
  • We recommend removing any panniers, top boxes, tank bags for the riding each day. You can ride to the venue with them on and leave them in your accommodation during training.
  • Barkbuster style hand guards will give good protection for your levers. Don’t stress if you don’t have them but they could save you from breaking a hand lever.
  • You need to be able to reach your rear brake lever comfortably while standing on the bike so make sure you can do this.  We will run through bike set up on the day but often riders need to buy additional brake lever tips so look into this if you can’t reach your brake comfortably.

Riding gear wise we expect you to wear your full protective kit you would normally wear on a ride.

  • MX boots are better than road or soft adventure style boots.  You need boots with good ankle/shin protection.
  • Adventure or MX helmets are better than road helmets. They provide better airflow at slower speeds than road helmet
