Are you dreaming of the deserts? Got a big desert trip planned for 2019? Got a Simpson crossing on your mind?
One of Australia’s unique natural beauties is the vast openness of our interior. Many people think of there being “nothing” out there in the deserts but once you’ve spent in time in the Aussie outback you really do appreciate its natural beauty. The flip side of the remote beauty is just that, it’s remote. This means you are completely at the mercy of the force that is Mother Nature and when things go wrong you are often a very long way from help.
Maschine love exploring the Aussie outback but we are also acutely aware of the dangers that can arise when riders aren’t properly prepared for or don’t respect their surroundings. We want to help arm riders with the skills and knowledge to survive in this unforgiving environment.
Don’t risk a premature end to your long awaited desert adventure. Prepare yourself.
Our Desert Preppers Adventure Academy is designed to be an immersive training environment where you not only learn the all important riding skills of mastering sand but we also cover many of the “soft skills” to help you survive in the deserts.
Our popular Sand Masterclasses have been a great introduction to sand riding which for many adventure riders is their arch nemesis. Our Desert Preppers course will cover many of the skills & drills of our Sand Riding course but will better prepare you for an epic outback adventure. Our Sand Riding courses will continue but will be a 1 day format and can continue to be a great refresher course to keep your sand skills honed.
A summary of the Desert Preppers curriculum includes;
The days will divided up between on-trail training and time in the “classroom” off the bike. Certainly the bulk of the time will be focussed on improving your riding.
The exact curriculum will be customised to each location so may vary a little depending on the terrain available.
We have chosen a few locations that we feel give a good taster for the outback while still remaining accessible to major population centres.
The geological formations of the Grampians in western Victoria signal the start of the Great Dividing Range. The range of tracks give us some good sandy and rocky tracks quite relevant to Aussie outback.
Stockton Beach, New South Wales
This infamous beach is a test for any adventure rider. One of the few beach areas in NSW that you can legally ride on with a set of “proper” dunes that will help prepare you for any outback sand you may encounter.
Rainbow Beach, Queensland
One of the longest stretches of beach you can run along on the way up to Fraser Island with great inland trails that make for great outback preparation training.
This academy course will run over two days allowing us time to cover the curriculum and answer your questions.
The course will begin at 8.30am on the Saturday of each designated weekend. After a day of riding the training will continue into the evening with dinner. Training will continue on Sunday with a finish time of 3-4pm so you can make your way back home for Sunday evening.
Our lead coach for this course will be Maschine’s own Nick Selleck. He is a Motorcycling Australia Level 1 accredited coach and has been riding off-road for 40 years. He takes pride in being a smooth, safe and consistent rider. Nick has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share when it comes to off-road riding. Nick grew up riding off-road and after several years competing in Motocross, Enduro and Supermotard he has spent the last 8 years planning and organising adventure tours.
His experience in riding desert terrain over the years includes; Flinders Ranges 3 x times, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, researching and retracing the Burke & Wills expedition route – Melbourne to Karumba, traversing the Tanami Track 3 x times, The Kimberley; including Gibb River Road, the Savannah Way twice, following the length of the Darling River from Bourke to Victor Harbour and Victoria’s Big Desert amongst others. Throughout most of these trips he has shared them with many riders so has not only learnt from his own experience but noted the challenges other riders have faced.
Nick may be assisted by other experienced coaches that can add valuable input to the training courses.
The cost for the two day course is $750 with the training going into the evening so it will be a full couple of days. This includes morning and afternoon refreshments as well as lunch each day. Also included in the course cost is any beach or forest access permit fees.
Dinner on Friday or Saturday night is up to the individual to pay for but we can all eat together. Accommodation is available on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday night at an additional cost. You can nominate single or shared accommodation in the order comments at the time of booking your course or you can source your own accommodation.
