This is the most comprehensive rider training course an adventure rider can throw themselves into. Most rider training courses run for one or two days. This academy runs for four days and is designed to cover more than just riding skills; you will also learn some of the “soft skills” of trailside repairs, GPS & navigation skills etc.
This is a “live in” training camp where all riders and instructors stay on site at the same accommodation with the education continuing into the night once the riding is done for the day. Basically you get to eat, breath and sleep adventure riding for four days!

What skills or topics can you expect to cover in this course?
Some of the skills will be developed in a controlled environment. Some of the training will take place in the classroom. Some of the training will take place out on the trails where we will tackle whatever comes our way!
The venues chosen for this course include quality 3-4 star accommodation in rural settings so we can concentrate on the learning.
Our lead coach for this course will be Maschine’s own Nick Selleck. He is a Motorcycling Australia Level 1 accredited coach and has been riding off-road for 40 years. He takes pride in being a smooth, safe and consistent rider. Nick has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share when it comes to off-road riding. Nick grew up riding off-road and after several years competing in Motocross, Enduro and Supermotard he has spent the last 12 years planning and organising motorcycle adventure tours.
His experience in adventure riding over since 2011 includes exploring the iconic regions of Australia; Victorian High Country, Tasmania, Flinders Ranges, Corner Country and Birdsville, researching and retracing the Burke & Wills expedition route – Melbourne to Karumba, Tanami Track, Kimberley region including Gibb River Road, Arnhem Land, Cape York, Savannah Way and Gulf Country and exploring the length of the Great Diving Range amongst others.
Aside from domestic tours Nick has also amassed tremendous experience riding and organising tours overseas through many European countries which helps to put things in perspective on a global scale.
Throughout most of these trips he has shared them with many riders so has not only learnt from his own experience but noted the challenges other riders have faced.
It would be fair to say few riders in Australia could claim to have such a broad knowledge of riding and managing motorcycle tours in as many regions as Nick Selleck. Others may have more intimate knowledge of specific regions but few could match Nick’s spread of knowledge. This all adds to Nick’s ability to relate to riders challenges and help create a path for them to improve their riding skill.
Where additional coaches are required for courses we choose to work with the best of the best. Coaches are chosen not only for their riding skill but also their personality to ensure they can explain often complex riding techniques which can add valuable input to the training courses.
When asked where the motivation came from for this course Maschine’s Nick Selleck had this to say “Some 20 odd years ago I attended a 5 day Academy of Off-Road run by Stephen Gall for motocross racing. The lessons that I learnt during that school have stuck with me for all this time because it was such an immersive training environment. My goal is replicate that immersive environment with our four day Adventure Academy. There is so much adventure riders have to become proficient with in order to successfully complete the big ambitious expeditions that many of us aspire to do.”
Plan to arrive between 8.00 – 8.30am
We will kick off with an introduction and riders briefing.
A nice easy trail ride to begin with to warm us all up.
A morning tea break to refresh you.
Now we are getting into it! We will take you through a bunch of riding drills to help improve your technique.
Time for a well earned breather and some food.
We will keep refining your technique and jamming you full of knowledge.
Time for a cooling drink and to go over what we learnt for the day before you make your way home.
This training course is classed as: Grade 2 Easy – Grade 4 Difficult
It is not recommended for Beginner riders. The first half of the day is OK for less experienced riders but after lunch a higher level of bike control proficiency is required to get the most out of the day.
See our Track Grading System for more detailed information to help you decide if this training course is right for you.
It depends a little on which course you are signing up for but we like to make our training courses suitable for “an average rider on a big-bore adventure bike”.
So we expect riders to have at least some motorcycle riding experience, ideally two years.
Our courses are usually suitable for big adventure bikes, like a KTM 1290 Super Adventure R or BMW R1200GS, ideally with off-road knobby tyres fitted.
For sure less experienced riders can, and have, joined our courses and they find them to be an incredible learning experience. You can learn so much just being around other riders.
If you have any questions or concerns just give us a call and we are happy to have a chat about your situation.
This training course is capped at 15 riders.
For group sizes of up to 8-10 riders there will be one coach. For group sizes of 8 or more we will have an assistant coach who is a high calibre rider deemed fit to support your learning.
Yes, we always recommend riders have knobby tyres on their bikes to maximise your safety and enjoyment.
Our recommended tyres in most situations are Motoz Tractionator Adventure or Motoz Tractionator Rallz (Nick’s favourite!) for their predictable off-road grip and outstanding durability.
For sure other tyres like Continental TKC80 or Pirelli Scorpion Rally are OK too.
We don’t advise riders to use 80/20 tyres like Hidenau K60 Scout or Continental TKC70. These styles of tyre just simply don’t offer enough traction in off-road situations, particularly when conditions get wet.
Yes, rental bikes are available.
Please see our list of available bikes here.
Yes. This ride is primarily for riders on their own adventure bikes.
Yes, this ride is suitable for Enduro bikes providing you have a minimum fuel range of 200km
We provide the pre-planned routes as a .GPX file you can load into your GPS or Smartphone navigation app. This will allow you to follow our planned route at your own pace and arrive safely at the overnight stop.
For each event we also provide printed daily route sheets which include an overview map and address details of fuel, food, overnight accommodation stops etc.
At some events we will also have route marking arrow stickers that are put up by our lead riders on trees, posts etc. as a physical marker.
No, for our off-road adventure tours we provide a luggage support van. You will drop your bag at the van each morning and the van will carry your bag to the overnight stop where it will be waiting for you to collect at the end of the day.
For our international road tours we typically don’t provide a luggage support vehicle so you will have to carry your own luggage. Usually our rental bikes come equipped with panniers and/or top box. Please confirm your required luggage options at time of booking.

No. Large gear bags, wheelie suitcases are not permitted in our luggage van. We have strict capacity limits.
Hard pannier cases are not recommended as your luggage because we can’t guarantee they won’t get scratched or damaged in transit therefore we recommend soft bags only.

No, for safety reasons we do not allow riders to ride with hard (aluminium or plastic) panniers or top box on their bikes for our off-road adventure tours. We have seen too many injuries caused by hard boxes hitting riders.
